    Frequently Asked Questions

Planning a safari raises a lot of questions, especially if it’s your first time. We’ve listed answers to the ones we hear the most – from what’s included to what you should pack. Still unsure? Just ask. We’re happy to talk you through it.

    Climate
The climate is hot and sometimes humid especially between December and March when the north-east monsoon blows. Long rains occur in April and May, with June to October being the coolest and driest period. Short rains fall in November. Generally, East Africa enjoys tropical weather and temperatures range between 25 and 35°C with annual rainfall averaging about 20mm.
    Clothing
Safari clothing should be informal. Lightweight cotton slacks, shirts, skirts, or culottes are recommended. A light jacket or sweater is useful especially in early morning and late evening. A hat or scarf for sun and dust protection is advisable, along with sunglasses and sunscreen. Long sleeves and trousers in light-colored fabrics help discourage insect bites.
    Baggage Allowance
Soft-sided bags or duffels are preferable to hard luggage for safari vehicles and light aircrafts. Domestic flights have a luggage limit of 15 kg per person, packed in soft bags. Insurance is recommended for baggage and personal effects.
    Currency
Kenya uses Kenya Shillings (KES) – denominations include 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1,000. 1 USD ≈ 119 KES. Tanzania uses Tanzania Shillings (TSH) – 1 USD ≈ 2,298 TSH. US dollars are accepted in most tourist facilities. Carry small dollar bills (USD 1, 5, 10, 20) and ensure they are from 2009 or newer.
    Shopping Trips
Curio/handcraft shops recommended by the company will be visited. Tour guides assist with safe purchases. Wildlife products are prohibited and possession attracts fines and jail terms.
    Electricity
Electricity is 240V AC, 50Hz. Some hotels provide 110V. Sockets are 3-pin (UK style). Safari lodges often use generators or solar, so power is usually available in mornings and evenings.
    Security
Safari circuits are generally safe. Avoid carrying large sums of money. Lock valuables in safes. Avoid walking alone at night or in unfamiliar areas.
    Tipping
Most establishments include a 10% service charge, but tipping is recommended. For safari guides, USD 7–10 per person per day is standard, given at the end of the safari.
    Booking Terms & Conditions
Cancellation policies apply. Travel insurance is highly recommended to recover costs from cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances or force majeure.
    Possible Safari Inconveniences
    • Rough roads may cause bumpy rides and minor breakdowns, though Essenia Safari Experts uses well-maintained vehicles.
    • Rain may disrupt game drives; your guide will assist and communicate via radio if help is needed.
    • Early hotel arrivals may mean waiting until official check-in.
    • Temporary power and water shortages can occur; lodges have backup plans.
    • Wi-Fi may be limited to lodge public areas.
    • Inoculations are recommended; Yellow Fever certificate is mandatory if arriving from affected zones.
